this is a verse that's very close to my heart. It's a goal for me to live by it, but as life goes on, it's seemingly very difficult to do so. I have always read the NIV 1984 version of this verse, and today I finally read the 2010 version, and they are worded very differently.
"Considering others better than yourselves" Vs. "Values others above yourselves"
"Considering others better than yourselves" has always meant to me as "we should always think others are better than us for whatever we do, and that is humility".
I just realized that I completely misunderstand this verse. It is not exactly what humility is.
I think the NIV-2010 version has a better explanation of what humility is. "Value others above yourselves". This is very different than what I have always think as "we should think others are better than us for whatever I do". After reading the new NIV version of "values others above yourselves", I have a whole new definition for verse 2:3 regarding humility, I think that humility means you consider others' before yourself. You consider their situation before yourself. You value their needs above your own.
Humility~ a goal that's very difficult to reach, I wonder again how jesus did it??

i am speculating that he did it out of pure love for us

Its hard in this world to see others as better than ourselves, basically to be humble. I always thought that if you gave people your heart as in do good for them then they in return would give you their heart (do good for you), but experience has shown me otherwise. People are always self seeking and only looks for their own benefits.... but as Christians, even in a world such as ours, we have to uphold God's teachings above all. Even when people treat us bad we will still treat them good in return. That is what it means to share God's love. Its a hard thing to accomplish, but if we are willing to do it and ask for God's help, then we will ultimately become a better person in the eyes of our Lord. So, always see others as better than yourself
